Is there any differnce between being a "Devotee" and a "follower"?

Of late there have been instances wherein the so called spiritual Gurus are caught off guard. We had the Nityananda episode and recently there have been allegation of land grabbing by Ravishankar of Art of Living. The media in its reports always uses the word Devotees while reporting the misdoings of these bogus gurus. I feel there can only be followers of these guys and not devotees. Hence what is the real difference between these two words. Please don't ask me to google. I am eliciting wide responses and opinions.
