What happens if hypothyroid goes untreated?

I hear it is hereditary, but I am the only one who has it. No other family members have been tested but I hope that no one in my family goes untreated if they do have it. Could I be the first? I was diagnosed 6 yrs ago, I am a 28 yr old female
