Have I made a mistake booking a holiday to the UK? Anti-Americanism?

I see and hear this a lot in UK movies, too. I think you still should give it a try and overcome what you hear from, like what you said, the average Brit. There should be a lot of sensible and sincere people out there you can mingle with. So don't give everything up.
