If there was a story where history had fantasy until the magic was banned, then when would it have been banned?

If there was a story with a semi-fictional version of history that featured some magic and fantasy until they were banned centuries ago by famous great men, would it be more suitable for the ban to have happened during the Renaissance or the Age of Enlightenment?
