Why dont we care more about people?

I was reading a story in the paper today about Haitians eating dirt as food. How can this happen with all the wealth in the world? Then I stopped to think there are hungry people right here, they are not eating dirt. Why is it that no one cares about anything until U2 makes a video or the Monks stage a protest. What is the UN actually doing. How can such atrocities go on and no one basically cares unless it is on CNN. Am I being naive to think that no one should have to eat dirt, or is that just the way it is. Shame on humanity.
